Weekly Wrap-Up (17/08/14)

The Sunday Post hosted @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer
It's Monday! hosted @ Book Journey

THIS PAST WEEK ON MY BLOG:

RECENT READS:

I quite enjoyed all of these books, but I especially loved Jackaby, the writing is superb and the characters are wonderful.

CURRENTLY READING:

For such an immense topic, Sapiens is such an fun and easy read without being too elementary. I haven't fallen in love with Let's Get Lost yet, but I am not ready to give up on it.

ADDITIONS TO MY TBR:
Stacking the Shevles hosted @ Tynga's Reviews

WHAT I BOUGHT:
Physical:

More books for university, Mrs Dalloway and The New York Trilogy don't look half bad, luckily.

Kindle:

I have heard so much about We Were Liars, and for 99p I thought I should give it a try. The Rithmatist looks like it should be a lot of fun and with Brandon Sanderson you can't can't go wrong.

I need some more science fiction in my life and I have heard so many good things about Leviathan Wakes and Ancillary Justice, that I could not refuse to buy them at such good prices.

FOR REVIEW:
From Bookbridgr

Gutenberg's Apprentice - A story that tells of the birth of the printing press and the genius behind it, yes please. Red Rising is one of my most favourite books this year and it was like Christmas come early when the paperback came through the post.

From Edelweiss

Sapiens is just my type of non-fiction book - a bit of history and a bit of science, written accessibly.
Girls proving that what boys can do, they can do better (well, at least just as well), plus the military and secret societies - Rites of Passage sounds like a load of fun.

From Netgalley

I love the tv show The 100, and while I know the books are different, I still really want to read them.

Of Bone and Thunder is apparently "Apocalypse Now meets The Lord of the Rings in a bold new fantasy", so how can I resist? And that cover is stunning. The Language of Hoofbeats got me at 'hoofbeats'; if there are horses involved, I am already interested.

The Young World reminded of the show Jeremiah and everybody and their brother is talking about Let's Get Lost, so I figured I would give them both a shot.

The American cover and the fact that Emma Watson is playing the heroine in the movie adaptation, are what drew my interest to The Queen of The Tearling. Again, there are horses involed in Stable Mates, so of course I requested it

NEXT WEEK ON MY BLOG:

Weekly Wrap-Up

Plus every morning, starting Tuesday, I will be posting my Bout of Books 11 daily progress and any challenges I may participate in.

WHAT I PLAN TO READ NEXT:

I am participating in the Bout of Book read-a-thon 11 next week and I posted by reading goals for that yesterday, which you can see here.

IN REAL LIFE:

You may have noticed that I have been absent for a few weeks, that is because I moved house. Moving house is indeed very stressful, but now we have settled in a bit, I can relax. I did plan on scheduling a bunch of posts, but me being the numnutz that I am, I forgot to actually schedule any posts. I wrote them but simply forgot to hit schedule, so now I have to re-schedule my posts, and reviews are going up a little later than planned. Oh well, it's all good ;-)

The new house needs a lot of work before we can really call it home, but once it gets there, it is going to be a very nice home indeed. One reason that we moved was so that we can more easily get jobs and though I haven't got a job yet, my sister got one within three days of moving in. Another reason was so I would be closer to university, and while it is a 40 minute walk away, that is so much better than a 40 minute bus journey.

So, who has seen Guardians of the Galaxy? How freaking awesome is it? It is so much fun and I can't wait to see it again.
We are Groot

One of my favourite books is Outlander by Diana Gabaldon and the Starz series started last week. I was so anxious about it because of how much I love the book, but I actually really enjoyed it. Despite a slow start (mind you, the book starts slowly too, I nearly gave up on it!) it is very good. I was also unsure about the casting of Jamie, as he is a fave fictional crush of mine, but that was well done too. I am very much looking forward to the rest of the series. Anyone else watch it?
I think he may be more beautiful than the Jamie I created in my head.
Aside from still being jobless and having a lot of work ahead to get this house feeling like home, life is good.
How about you? You enjoying life?
Read and/or received any especially good books lately?

  1. I haven't seen Guardians of the Galaxy yet but I really really want to. XD It sounds so epic and hilarious and since when did Marvel ever disappoint?!! They're so awesome. I want to read Queen of the Tearling too, and I've heard that Emma Watson is cast. Ohhhh it's going to be freakishly awesome. I loved We Were Liars! The ending...WOAH. Mind = blown. I hope you enjoy The Young World. I liked it, but I am a fan of all this apocalypse. ;)

    1. I agree, GotG is epic and hilarious and you are right, Marvel do not ever disappoint.

I love the apocalypse too, well, novels to do with the apocalypse anyway, i am sure I wouldn't like a real one ;-)

I think hearing about the ending is the main reason I want to read We Were Liars.

  2. Good luck on the job hunting and getting your home organized. I've read and enjoyed Rites of Passage and The Queen of the Tearling. I almost never get to movies but will probably buy the DVD for Guardians of the Galaxy. Outlander has been on my TBR pile for years. I think the slow start is keeping me from getting into it. Come see what I got at Inside of a Dog and Ms. Martin Teaches Media. Happy reading!

    1. Thanks Kathy :-)

I think you should give Outlander another go, because once you get past the slow start it gets amazing.

  4. What a great book haul, really :) ! It's good that the stressfull part of moving is now behind you, I hope you'll find a job soon. I watched Outlander too, it's true it was slow but it didn't bother me a bit. The photography was very soft and the slowness added to give an oniric quality. Then Jamie showed up and I forgot all about oniric lol ! Have a great week :)

    1. Yeah I am very with this haul, looking forward to (nearly) all of these books.

You're not wrong about Outlander and Jamie is all kinds of dreamy though, isn't he ;-)

  5. I've heard amazing things about the Outlander series. I'm so glad it seems to be keeping the spirit of the book. I'm wanting to watch Guardians of the Galaxy. I've heard it's very funny. We Were Liars was an interesting book. I really enjoyed it though I know the reviews were mixed. The good thing is that it's such a quick read that even if you end up not loving it you haven't made to much of a time commitment. Have a great week!

    1. Guardians of the Galaxy is definitely funny and yes I am so happy that the show Outlander is so close to the book (so Far!)

We were Liars being short will good consolation if it turns out I don't like it ;-)

I am the same way about We Were Liars, I have to see what all the fuss is about.

I enjoyed Young World, it's not that original but at least it's fun.
